Why do those black motorcycle leather jackets zip on the side?

& not directly in the middle?
The first motorcycle jacket was styled after a double breasted jacket, and those also have the ’side’ seam http://www.dancepants.com/images/Am_Smooth_Jacket_double_breasted.jpg
It’s a trend that was started by Perfecto as early as the late 1920’s. It’s fairly iconic.
That said, many motorcycle jackets do zip right up the middle.
It’s just a fashion thing.
No idea, all of mine zip up the middle.
