Protect Your Hide When You Ride!

I was wondering if I actually need to own a motorcycle to obtain my motorcycle license? I’m planning on getting my motorcycle later on. If so, how long until the license expires?

You will need to borrow one to take the riding part of the exam, you dont need to own it of course.

No, you dont. You can take the MSF riders course and get the cetificate of completion, take it to DMV and they will endorse your license, no riding test necessary (in most states).

The endorsment lasts as long as you are licensed. Here in Az, drivers licenses expire when you turn 65…then it has to be renewed…..LOL….kinda weird.

  5. Steve Said,

You don’t have to own a bike, but you are going to need one to get used to riding before you take the exam. In Indiana you must also ride the bike to the exam site for the obstacle course. I would recommend some riding experience before you take the obstacle riding exam. It may seem simple, but it is a little more difficult than you think. In Indiana it is administered by ABATE and they do a thourough job. It is not just a walk through and they hand you a signed permit.

You may be better to get your bike first and drive on the permit for a while which is only a written exam. Then after 30 days you can take the test at an approved testing site.

  6. Michael Said,

You don’t need a motorcycle in order to be licensed if you take the MSF or the "Riders Edge" course.

In Texas, if you pass the MSF course, then you only need to take a written exam.

    No you don’t.
How long a license lasts is set by the state.
Mine gets renewed every 5 years…..now, it used to be every 4.

  8. Dan Said,

You at LEAST need to be able to borrow one for the test.
The fee will be prorated to expire with your drivers license.
In TX, you will need a registered, licensed and insured bike AND a registered, licensed and insured car with driver to chauffeur the examiner around during the test. The person you borrow the bike from can probably do this for you.
